Firpo Day a Great Success
7/6/2019

I don't know whose idea it was, but it turned out to be a good one: let's have Justin Firpo play every position in one game. And KCHK was there to document it all.

One of the crazier moments of the Firpo experiment was that he had a put out or an assist at every position until the 9th inning, when no fly ball or pop up was hit his way. It was crazy, and I bet it hasn't happened very many times in baseball history, where a player plays every position and records an out or assist at every position...

Another fun part of the day was watching Andy Henkemeyer hit. He was 3-3 on the day, with four RBI thanks to two dingers. The second one came at the end of a ten-pitch at bat. You could see him waiting for his pitch, then once he had two strikes, fouling off anything that was close but not in his zone until he finally got the pitch he wanted and drilled it over the right field fence.

And not to be overshadowed by Firpo Day or #28 was perhaps the story of the game: Nick Rost on the mound. The most quotable player in the league and 2013 DRS Wins Leader, The Zookeeper turned back the clock and pitched an absolute gem. #5 threw seven strong innings, scattering seven hits, walking only one, and pitching to contact all day (i.e., no strikeouts). He works fast and he's fun to watch. He's the Zookeeper, and he's a ROSTBRO.

Why "The Zookeeper"? Well, I'm glad you asked. Quite simply, each pitch from his deep arsenal acts like an animal, an animal of which he is in complete control. For instance, there's The Butterfly, a slider-like pitch that dips and darts and is tough to catch with a net. And then there's the Cheetah, which can change speeds so fast you don't know if it's a fastball or a changeup (it's a changeup). Occassionally, he unleashes the Groundhog, wherein the pitch travels about 55' in an attempt to bounce into the zone. But don't forget about the Octopus, a pitch that gradually widens the zone so much only an octopus would be able to reach it. (Thanks to Nate Rost for providing info on these pitches.)

Fun day all around, Muskies defeat St. Benedict 10-2.
