Herber was really good yesterday.
But before he even took the mound the offense had given him a five-run cushion to work with.
He wouldn't need any of it.
We only had one hit in the first, but it was a big one: with two men on, Tyler Bergstrom hit a line-drive into the forest behind the left field fence. Prior to that, guys were walked, guys were hit by pitches, guys reached on errors, and there was even a sacrifice fly.
The second inning was much the same. Squeak squared up another ball, this time for an RBI single (he had three hits on the afternoon), and Sweet Swinging Baby Face Joe McKibben nearly had his first ever dinger as a citizen of planet Earth, but alas, it was not to be; it hit about a foot below the top of the net in right-center and bounced back into the field for a two-run single.
In the middle of the 6th inning a white limousine pulled up behind our dugout, Harvard Martin stepped out in full uniform (I thought it was for sure gonna be Willie Mays Hayes), walked right up to the plate, hit the second pitch he saw for a sac fly, gave some high fives, hopped back into his limo, and we haven't heard from him since. But hey, he's playoff-eligible now, so I think we'll be seeing him again real soon. Gotta love it.
But that wasn't even the highlight of the game. The highlight of the game happened right before Harv hit his 240 ft. sac fly. Remember a few weeks ago when I told you that Derek Bergstrom had incorporated a powerful leg kick into his swing? Well, you should, because the Lanky Lefty wasn't fibbing. Somehow Derek convinced Todd to let him hit for Kyle. Todd consented. And then Derek absolutely crushed the first pitch he saw off the netting in right field (in more or less the same place where Kibby hit his ball). If that wasn't enough, he made a sweet pick at first base in the top half of the next inning. The guy's a ball player, I'm tellin' ya...
Anyway, Herb went all seven, struck out seven, walked one, and gave up only two hits. The game ended early on account of the ten-run rule.
So with that win the Muskies are officially the #2 seed in the Region 3C Playoffs. Our next game will be on Sunday, July 30th at 2PM in New Market, opponent TBD. Stay tuned friends, we're getting to the good part...
