The last two games of the regular season had major playoff implications for us. Win one and we secure a spot in the top 4, which would give us a bye in the first round of the Region playoffs; win both and we secure the #2 seed.
Our first opponent was Union Hill; we traveled there on Saturday.
As you might have guessed from the headline, The Nate Rost was on the bump for us, and he was on his game from the first pitch.
The Bulldogs got their only run in the first inning. With one out, Berg, UH's second hitter, was hit by a pitch. Then there was an error. Then D. Steinhoff singled up the middle. Then UH didn't score again.
We tied it up in the second. Harry singled with one out, took second as Scotty grounded out to second, and then came around to score on a TNR single up the middle.
The game would remain tied until the 7th.
Jay Chlan singled off Feneis to start the inning. Stewart followed with a walk. Ballantyne flew out to left for the first out. With Scotty at the plate, Jay made an agressive baserunning decision, trying to advance to third on a ball that got away from the catcher, but was thrown out on a close play. After Stewart stole second, Scotty singled through the hole between third and short and the Fish had the lead, 2-1.
Things got interesting in the bottom of the 9th. After the first two batters were retired, Adam Giesen reached on an infield squibber and Beckius was hit by a pitch. That brought Gill to the plate. He smoked the 2-1 pitch towards the hole between first and second, but Tyler Bergstrom laid out and made an incredible diving stop. He leapt to his feet and threw Gill out at first to save the day and end the game.
It was a great ending to a great game. TNR went all nine, fanned six, and didn't walk anyone. This win secured us a spot in the top 4. The final game against St. Benedict will decide if we're the #2 or #4 seed.
