Well, it sure wasn't pretty, but a win is a win, and we'll take it.
As you'll notice from a careful examination of the box score, our bats went uncharacteristically quiet yesterday: four hits (cue Harry Doyle). Maybe it had to do with the psychology of a 15mph wind blowing straight in from center field the whole game, maybe it had to do with the fact that we'd already clinched the #1 seed in Region 3 and our intensity was admittedly not at its characteristic eleven, or maybe it had to do with the fact that this is just a silly game.
Either way, as far as I'm concerned, the story from yesterday's game was the starting pitching performance of Parker Holmstrom. The kid had been hit around his last few times out, but he responded admirably, more than admirably even, throwing seven strong innings, giving up only three hits, while walking a pair and striking out just as many. The ball looked to be jumping out of his hand; fun to watch, kid.
We had a 2-0 going into the bottom of the 7th, but UH managed to push across unearned runs in both the 7th and 8th.
It took us until the 11th to finally break the 2-2 tie. Bases loaded, one out, and D. Bergstrom of all people was at the plate. Conventional wisdom would have you believe he would be swinging for the fences, but the manager had other plans, and D. Bergstrom laid down an absolutely perfect suicide squeeze, scoring Scotty Lyden and giving us a 3-2 lead. T. Bergstrom would help add another the very next at bat with a sac fly to right, bringing us to a score of 4-2.
The Lanky Lefty slammed the door in the 11th, striking out a pair and earning the win in the process.
And with that, we finished DRS play with a record of 20-3, the best regular season we've had in my eleven years here.
Also worth pointing out is that Andy Henkemeyer won the Triple Crown in the DRS this season. Just counting DRS games, Henky hit .466 with 10 dingers and 35 RBI. No big deal: #ElevateAndCelebrate
Our first playoff game will be July 31st in New Market, time and opponent TBD. Stay tuned for details.
