For some reason we always seem to play really close games against Lonsdale at their home park. Last Thursday was no exception.
There are two main stories from this game.
First, newcomer Steve McGuiggan (pronounced "Mick-Wiggan" or "MaGoogs") earned his first Muskie hit in the form of an absolute laser beam that cleared the left field fence in a hurry.
Second, after playing this game for 27 years it is still possible to see something you've never seen before. In this case, the event in question happened in the 5th inning. Here's how it unfolded: T. Bergstrom reaches on error, Ripp gets HBP, Herb singles, bases juiced. Lead-off hitter walks, run scores. Scotty walks, run scores. Kyle grounds one back to the pitcher, pitcher throws home, run does not score---one out. Next batter is The Nate Rost. He grounds it back to the pitcher, pitcher throws home for the first out, catcher throws in the general vicinity of first base and glances off Nate's right shoulder. Umpire calls Nate out for runner's interference? Yes. That is what happened. Runner's interference for running in the baseline and the catcher hitting him in the back. Keep in mind this ball would've been all the way down the right field line otherwise. Never seen such a thing before. Crazy. And so what could've been a huge inning with bases loaded and nobody out turned into a paltry two run inning.
Okay, whatever, we still had a chance to overcome, and we didn't. It's on us. Good start by Parker. Nate came in and pitched nicely as well. But we left too many men on base and that's that. Tip of the cap to Lonsdale.
